Surfaces come from OpenStreetMap. Roads without a surface tag count as asphalt, farm tracks without one as off-road. A single gravel stretch makes a climb off-road. A dead end is a road where the only way out is back the way you came. Motorways, trunk roads, slip roads and any road where OpenStreetMap forbids bikes are never included.
