Privacy
Flemish Roads is a free, non-commercial project. Questions about your data: hello@flemishroads.com.
The short version: no ads, no tracking cookies, nothing sold, and we keep as little as we can. That is why there is no cookie banner: nothing on this site needs your consent.
What stays in your browser
Your map view, filters and layer choices are kept in your own browser (local storage), so the map opens the way you left it. If you sign in, your browser also keeps you signed in. None of this is used to follow you, and you can clear it any time in your browser's settings.
Your location
If you allow it, your location only centres the map or starts a route. It is never stored or sent to us.
Accounts
If you create an account, we keep your email address, your display name and the routes you save, so you can sign in and find them again. They are stored with Supabase, our database provider. You can delete your routes at any time; email us to delete your account and everything in it.
Visitor counts
We count page visits with Vercel Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and does not identify you.
How the map is used
To learn which features help riders, the map counts what is done on it: which climbs are opened, which filters and layers are used, whether routes are planned, saved or exported, and how long the visit lasted. These counts go to PostHog, an analytics service whose servers are in the EU (Frankfurt), and are kept for up to a year.
Nothing is stored on your device for this, and nothing is read from it: no cookies, no local storage, no screen size, language or other device details. What PostHog gets is what every website request carries anyway: the page's address, the site you came from, your browser's name and your IP address. It uses the IP address to tell the country and city and to count visitors without storing anything on your device; that count resets every day, so you are not followed from one day to the next, and no profile of you is made. Your email, your name, your routes and your location are never part of it. Visits from signed-in administrators and from automated browsers are not counted.
We do this because we have a legitimate interest in knowing which parts of the map are used, and it tells us nothing about who you are. Add ?notrack to the address to switch it off for a visit.
Who else sees your visit
Like any website, a few services see your IP address to do their job: Vercel, which hosts the site; OpenFreeMap, which serves the background map; Supabase, if you sign in; and PostHog, as above. They get only what they need to send you the pages, the map and your account.
Your rights
You can ask us what we hold about you, to correct it or to delete it. Email hello@flemishroads.com about anything on this page. If you think we got it wrong, you can also complain to the Belgian Data Protection Authority (dataprotectionauthority.be).
